Companys, realizing that he would have to cooperate with the workers or see his government destroyed, welcomed them. "8 The realities of the situation during July could not have been altered by Companys through any strength of personality, let alone political power. " In other words, he was a man unable "to arrest the rising tide of anarchy'' that swept over Barcelona that summer. Companys remained in power because the CNT felt it needed his support.

While the majority of their activities lie outside the scope of this book, it is important to keep in mind that factions existed within the Socialist Party that were as strident and divisive as those within the anarchist movement. The factionalism among the socialists is important because it was this party that dominated national politics at the start of the Civil War and provided the majority of the political leadership of the Catalan governments during the Second Republic. These same leaders were also regional nationalists.
